Here are the six top differences between a cheap synthetic beanie and a Merino wool beanie:

Material Quality

  • Cheap Synthetic: Made from low-grade polyester or acrylic fibers, often less breathable and prone to pilling.
  • Merino Wool: Made from fine, natural Merino wool fibers that are soft, breathable, and naturally odour-resistant.

Comfort & Feel

  • Cheap Synthetic: Can feel itchy, stiff, or plastic-like and cause discomfort over prolonged wear.
  • Merino Wool: Soft, smooth, and gentle on the skin, providing all-day comfort even for sensitive skin.

Thermal Regulation

  • Cheap Synthetic: Poor at regulating temperature, often makes you sweaty or cold because it doesn’t wick moisture well.
  • Merino Wool: Excellent at temperature regulation, wicks moisture away, keeps you warm when cold and cool when hot.

Durability & Longevity

  • Cheap Synthetic: Prone to stretching, pilling, and losing shape quickly after washing or use.
  • Merino Wool: Natural resilience and elasticity help maintain shape and look great over many wears and washes.

Environmental Impact

  • Cheap Synthetic: Made from petrochemicals, non-biodegradable, and contributes to microplastic pollution.
  • Merino Wool: Biodegradable, renewable, and sourced from ethically farmed sheep, minimizing environmental harm.

Odour Resistance

  • Cheap Synthetic: Retains odours and may require frequent washing.
  • Merino Wool: Naturally odour-resistant due to its antimicrobial properties, stays fresh longer between washes.

What are the benefits of Merino Wool?

When it comes to beanies here are a list of benefits:

  • Enhances comfort and reduces itchiness: Merino wool is very soft and gentle on the skin.
  • Superior fit and stability: Due to its natural texture, merino wool snugly sits on the head without slipping, providing stability and comfort.
  • Constant freshness: The breathability of merino wool assists in regulating core body temperature, making it suitable for both outdoor pursuits and everyday wear.
  • Moisture control: Its moisture-wicking properties efficiently draw sweat and moisture away from the skin, ensuring dryness and comfort.
  • Natural cleanliness: Merino wool's innate antimicrobial properties neutralize bacteria that cause body odour, minimizing the need for frequent washing when worn for extended periods outdoors.
  • Warmth: Merino wool beanies are renowned for their superior warmth compared to synthetic beanies due to the unique properties of merino wool
fibres. The natural crimp in merino wool fibres creates tiny air pockets within the fabric, which act as insulators, trapping heat and roviding excellent thermal regulation.
  • Durability and Longevity: Unlike synthetic materials or inferior wool grades, merino wool stands out for
its exceptional longevity. Thanks to its natural elasticity, the fibres in merino wool inherently bounce back, allowing the garment to maintain its shape even after prolonged wear.
  • Environmental Impact: When compared to synthetic materials, merino wool emerges as a more sustainable choice, given its renewable and biodegradable nature.
  • Sustainability Merino wool lends itself to sustainable manufacturing practices when contrasted with synthetic materials, which often necessitate extensive processing in large facilities. Wool can be hand-woven by a single individual, leading to the feasibility of smaller-scale factories and mills.

Today, Superyellow stands as a leading headwear brand, proudly represented by over 200 retailers across the globe. Yes, the beanies from SuperYellow are specifically designed in Finland to withstand extreme cold temperatures, including conditions where winter temperatures can drop as low as -50°C. Each beanie is assigned both a thermal rating and a length rating to help you choose the right one for harsh winter weather(see under description).

For extreme cold temperatures like -35°C to -50°C, it is recommended to select beanies with:

Thermal Rating: 3 of 3 (highest level of insulation)
Length Rating: 3 of 3 (extra coverage for warmth)
Based on these ratings, the beanies best suited for these extreme temperatures are:

Bertha (Chunky Thick Mohair Beanie)
Aida (Extra Thick Merino Beanie)
Norden (Merino Beanie)
Additionally, the Beam beanie (Merino Wool Chunky Beanie) has the highest thermal rating of 3/3 but a length rating of 2/3. While still very warm, it provides slightly less coverage than the above models.

You can explore these and other high-quality beanies on the Finnscott Beanies Collection page, where you will find a range of options made from premium materials like merino wool and mohair, all made for cold climates.

Crafted with Heritage, Designed for Extremes

All our SuperYellow beanies are proudly made in Finland, utilizing century-old knitting techniques passed down through generations. By keeping production local, we not only uphold Finland’s rich craftsmanship tradition but also maintain rigorous control over every step of the manufacturing process. This ensures our beanies meet the highest standards of quality and sustainability.

Designed specifically for the harshest Finnish winters, our beanies have been extensively tested in Arctic conditions to guarantee exceptional warmth, durability, and comfort. Engineered to protect against extreme cold while remaining breathable and lightweight, they deliver reliable performance in the most demanding environments.

With thoughtful design, superior materials, and ethical production practices, our Finnish-made beanies blend timeless heritage with modern sustainability—offering you premium headwear that stands the test of time and temperature.

Committed to Transparency and Sustainability Through Certified Standards

At Superyellow, we believe that using materials certified by reputable third-party organizations is fundamental to ensuring complete transparency and accountability in our production process. Our commitment goes beyond quality — it reflects our dedication to ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.

All our materials, production methods, and supply chains have been rigorously verified and certified according to the highest global standards, including:

Woolmark: Guaranteeing premium quality wool that meets stringent performance and durability criteria.
Responsible Wool Standard (RWS): Ensuring that the wool comes from farms with high animal welfare practices and sustainable land management.
Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS): Certifying organic fibers and environmentally friendly production processes that minimize harmful chemicals and waste.
Mulesing Free: Affirming that no sheep have undergone mulesing, reflecting our commitment to animal welfare.
Global Recycled Standard (GRS): Verifying the recycled content of materials while ensuring responsible social, environmental, and chemical practices throughout the supply chain.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: Confirming that our textiles are tested for harmful substances and safe for human use.

By adhering to these internationally recognized certifications, Superyellow guarantees that every beanie you wear not only performs exceptionally but is also produced with respect for people, animals, and the planet.

Our merino wool beanies have tight knitting, are thick and cover your ears. So yes, they are perfect for windy weather. However if you are expecting to be in freezing windy conditions then select a beanie that has more length (rating 3) which will provide more protection around the neck and ears.

Our beanies are one size and they fit for both men and women. Merino wool beanies adjust to your head when used without loosing their shape. For kids we have two sizes available: size 1 (46-50cm) and size2 (52-56cm).

The merino wool we use is sourced exclusively from farms that uphold a strict "mulesing-free" policy. This ensures that the welfare of the sheep is prioritized and that they are not subjected to any harm.

In essence, mulesing, a surgical practice involving the removal of skin from the sheep's breech, is avoided, preventing unnecessary discomfort and promoting humane farming practices. By adhering to mulesing-free standards, we support ethical and responsible treatment of the sheep in our supply chain.

Merino wool can be machine washed on delicate 30°, however usually airing is enough to freshen up the beanie. Do not use fabric softner. Lie flat to dry. Do not handwash. Please follow carefully the merino wool care instructions.
